Everyone is a bit nervous when they head off for their first hot air balloon ride. Here are just a few tips and facts that will help you to make the most of it.
The take-off
The launch of a hot air balloon is very smooth and gentle so this is something that you do not need to worry about. The launch is still an amazing experience but it is also very stable and gradual, so there is no sudden lurch of the basket that will throw you off your feet. Remember that the pilot is very experienced and knows exactly what they are doing.
The ride
A ride in a hot air balloon is very gentle and peaceful and you will find that once you have ascended into the skies the balloon almost glides through the air. Even if people are moving around to take photographs and video you will remain steady throughout the flight.
Balloon landings
The balloon landing can be a little bit bumpy and the crew may ask you to move around to give the smoothest possible landing. You could be asked to lead or even squat to get the right balance for a smooth landing. Just trust the pilot and enjoy the unique experience.
Extra kit
If you are taking along a camera or your phone to capture the event (and we recommend that you do!) it is a good idea to have an extra strap to fasten it to your wrist or around your neck so you won’t be worried about losing it mid-flight. You might want to limit what you take along with you though apart from this. You won’t need a bag of random things, just your camera or phone, plus a few dollars to tip the pilot will be all you need.
Motion sickness
Most people who suffer from motion or travel sickness have reported that the smooth nature of a hot air balloon ride means that they do not get sick during the flight. It is not a bumpy ride at all and there is almost no swaying of the basket. Most people who can handle a standard car journey will be find during a flight.
Champagne return
Many hot air balloon operators will break open the champagne for crew and passengers to enjoy a toast when they have landed. This is a great way to celebrate the end of a wonderful trip with some new friends.
